Helicopter children: Hovering over your elderly parents

This is a very difficult subject for many families.  The man at the beginning of this video uses the “bulldozer” technique: taking things away from his parents probably without any healthy discussion with them.

It can solve the safely issue at hand, like dangerous driving, but it leaves the loved one feeling helpless and lost, after ripping control away from them.

The biggest priority a senior has is maintaining control.  Many have had many losses- their home, driving, managing finances, their physical decline, death of friends- the list goes on.   It’s not an easy position to be in.

It’s important to include a senior in decision making as much as possible.

Giving them choices and discussing the pros and cons of each helps them feel involved and in control and often results in them making the right decision.  Although memory impairment can complicate decision making with a senior, always respecting their input and having them be as much a part of the decision as possible is the key to success.
